Is our society denying laborers corporate accountability? Thoughts on the recent Southwest Airlines labor exodus.

Is our society denying laborers corporate accountability? Thoughts on the recent Southwest Airlines labor exodus.

An article was recently published by Business Insider titled “Southwest asking corporate employees to work at airports; staffing”. https://www.businessinsider.com/southwest-asking-corporate-employees-to-work-at-airports-staffing-shortages-2021-12?op=1

It seems that the article is implying that operational employees no longer want to work at Southwest Airlines. In a free market society laborers usually don’t want to leave the stability of their workplace unless there is a reason. I don’t know why Southwest Airlines employees are leaving but based on reasons people typically do leave their employment it could be because of things like hostile working conditions, unfair compensation policies, or a threat against their safety.

So we know that something is causing a mass exodus of employees at Southwest Airlines. And it is a big enough issue that people who would otherwise remain in a stable, employed position are willing to disrupt their lives because of it.

From a corporate accountability standpoint, where consumers hold publicly traded shares in the company, this mass exodus should probably trigger some sort of corporate policy reform. There should be corporate accountability for how executives are directly causing employees to leave in mass at a publicly traded company.

But instead, according to the article, corporate executives are instead asking mid-level employees to “volunteer” to work for free. And yes, this DOES sound like a massive overstep of power. We have no way to know that the “volunteers” are not being coerced to “volunteer” out of fear. This fear might be driven from fear of losing their job, fear of not getting a promotion, fear of executive leadership choosing to run the entire company to the ground rather than reform their policies, or other reason.

I am curious though if the CEO “volunteered” to work any of these 8 hour shifts.

So here are some interesting things to consider. Southwest airlines is a publicly traded company and average middle class U.S. citizens do hold some of those shares. I’m sure that employees of Southwest Airlines also own shares of the company’s stock. So according to how our capital markets are supposed to be working, Southwest’s executive leadership should be aligning corporate policy with the best interest of its shareholders. But the shareholders (i.e. employees) are leaving, possibly being censored in the media, and the remaining employees are working for free.

In a world where corporate accountability was paramount, don’t you think the ideal response of a publicly traded company to be:

  • That it changes it’s policies that are making operational laborers uncomfortable?

  • That it changes it’s leadership which is pushing policies that operational laborers are uncomfortable with?

In a society where corporations were held accountable, I believe the results would be dramatically different. Mid-level employees would probably be paid for the work they are performing instead of “volunteering” to work for free over the holidays. Operational laborers would be able to keep the financial stability of the job they have held for however many years. And middle class consumers wouldn’t see the value in their investment decline as the company loses money over unpopular policies.

5 steps to create your 2022 financial plan

5 steps to create your 2022 financial plan

Katelyn here! Earlier this month I shared with my followers in my private FB community “the Savvy Boss Club” the December 2021 financial planning calendar. This calendar is based on the same financial planning calendars that I used many times before at large multinational corporations.

This time every year you can expect your finance partners to be busy finalizing the draft version of the 2022 financial plan by using estimated Dec'21 results (because the full-year results won't be available until January when December has officially closed).

Technically though, I had my business unit dialed in and we had our plan mostly done all the way back in September. Which means that I started sending my team their planning templates back in March.

And I did that because if my team had any hope of getting the money they wanted approved by executive leadership in October, I had to start the negotiations back in July.

Keep in mind I was negotiating for a minimum of $400M.

I am very proactive when it comes to planning for a lot of reasons. One reason is because my dad is a real estate developer. I grew up hearing about how in order to make a profit, first you have to invest in all the resources you need. If you don't have the resources you need then you can't make the thing you want to make and you certainly can't sell it.

And those pesky finance folks can get in the way of allocating the right amount of budget to get those materials and build those houses!

I really do have so many stories of my internal battles with finance coworkers and leadership to advocate for my business to get the budget they requested.

But I couldn't advocate for anything if I didn't have my team dialed in working with me to create our financial plan at the right time.

It is critical for the success of your business to have a financial plan for 2022. And that's just in general, not even counting the sky-rocketing inflation, supply chain crisis, labor shortage, and a ridiculous list of current events that are currently taking a toll on people.

So here are five steps you can take today to create your 2022 estimated financial plan:

Step 1: Download your bank statement into csv or excel format.

Everything should always tie back to your bank statement! Now keep in mind that cash flow is not the same as profit and you have to take extra steps to correctly recognize revenue and expenses.

Step 2: Categorize your revenue and expenses in broad categories.

You can do this easily directly in the csv or excel sheet that you downloaded. Just pick a column next to the data and in the same row each transaction add common category.

Step 3: Make adjustments.

Be sure to add to the end of the data any additional revenue or expenses you expect to incur by the end of the year that are not yet reflected in your bank statement. An example would be if you are running Facebook Ads and the ad is running and you are incurring a liability but Facebook hasn’t charged you yet. Add this expense at the bottom of your transactions list with an estimated amount.

Step 4: Total everything up according to the categories in a P&L format.

If you need help with a P&L format comment below “P&L”.

Step 5: Duplicate the totals and use a multiplier for each category.

Take your 2021 estimated results and use that as the base for your 2022 financial plan. Then multiply each category by a growth multiplier. Especially when there is high inflation, you need to include the impact of expected higher expenses in the future.

If you want to see my live training on these 5 steps you can view it here: https://fb.me/e/4mQunQeoc

Women-owned businesses categorized as “non-essential” during Covid

Women-owned businesses categorized as “non-essential” during Covid

I just finished my reliable revenue forecasting course with a lesson in there on how to look at demographic data for your business. Looking at demographic data always highlights for me the discrepancy between women-owned businesses and male-owned businesses. Interestingly enough, the government’s response to Covid-19 exacerbated an already touchy issue. Here is just one report by the US Chamber of Commerce discussing this change of events.

The report highlights that:

  • Male-owned businesses feeling “good” dropped by 5 points while female owned businesses feeling “good” dropped by 13 points

  • There are a lower number of women owned businesses compared to male-owned businesses to start with.

    • Which means that of the smaller population of women owned businesses an even greater percentage of the total was having trouble.

Let’s talk about why…

Businesses that were ruled as “non-essential” seemed to be predominately in industries with a greater population of female entrepreneurs like: health and fitness centers, spa and esthetician services, hair salons, etc. Taking that into consideration, I want to specifically compare the decision to categorize marijuana businesses as essential compared to health and fitness studios. Businesses that sell marijuana in California under governor Newsom were allowed to continue operating because of the health benefits they provided. Interestingly enough there is arguably MORE research supporting the health benefits of exercise but those businesses were shut-down as non-essential. Why is that?

Well, there was a lack of evidence to support that research was used to categorize businesses as essential or non-essential. Since politicians were making the decisions, we can assume that the decisions were then politically driven. And since women make up a smaller percentage of total politicians (https://cawp.rutgers.edu/current-numbers) we can assume that women were outnumbered in the decision making process.

Going forward, I hope there is more transparency on the decision making processes that impact the ability for women to operate profitable businesses. One way for there to be more transparency is for women owned businesses to understand and have confidence in their finances. This is what I help with. I help women learn professional methods for managing their money so that they can have confidence in the future of their business and easily explain it to anyone who doubts their ability.

Share this if it resonated with you!

3 Simple Strategies to Grow a Facebook Group

3 Simple Strategies to Grow a Facebook Group

*Guest blog by Jono Petrohilos from The Course Creator Community.

** I’m thrilled to post this content to my blog as there are quite a few business owners taking advantage of Facebook Groups today. I found this article to be an easy read and informative! Remember to take advantage of my FREE Direct Your Business With Confidence for all kinds of tips and tricks on how manage money for your business.

When it comes to growing a Facebook Group in 2021, there are hundreds (if not thousands) of ways to do it! Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Tik Tok, Clubhouse, Podcasts… you name it!

BUT…

Most of the strategies above take time and effort!

And look… There’s nothing wrong with a bit of hard work… Especially when starting off… You’re going to need to work hard!

But the ultimate goal when it comes to growing a Facebook Group is to let Facebook do most of the heavy lifting for us!

We want to leverage the Facebook algorithm so that OUR group shows up in the Facebook feed without us having to do anything.

This way, you can spend less of your time actually growing the group and more of your time on engaging the group and converting your Group members to leads and clients!

Strategy 1: Naming Your Facebook Group

I recently wrote a full blog on how to name your Facebook Group and I share the specific formula to use (you can find that here) but let me give you the overview here!

You want to name your Facebook Group something that your ideal group member is searching!

E.g. One of my Facebook Groups is called the Course Creator Community and one of the questions to join my Facebook Group is “where did you hear about us”. Every day I will get 4-5 new members' requests to join the Group, saying they heard about us simply typing in “Course Creator” in the Facebook search bar!

There’s no better group member than this! They have actively searched for what we do on Facebook, found our group, clicked join, answered a few personal questions and maybe even given us their email! All from just naming the Group correctly!

We also get a similar number of group member requests who say ‘Our group popped up in their feed / suggested groups’ and they joined because they are Course Creators or want to be course creators!

Now the Group popping up in their news feed doesn’t have anything to do with the Group name, that’s got more to do with how engaged our Group is. However, the members are joining our Group because the name of the Group makes it super clear / obvious what we do!

A few common mistakes Group Admin’s make when naming their group:

1) They make the group name too cute / clever

e.g. I have a friend who runs a finance company called ‘Python Wealth’. He has a community Facebook Group and he’s named it - ‘The Snake Pit’. Now I think that’s pretty clever and cute. In saying that the only people that are going to find / join his group organically are snake enthusiasts and snake enthusiasts are not his ideal client!

2) They name their group after their business

This makes sense in theory because your Facebook Group is essentially an extension of your business but similar to above, no one is searching on Facebook for your business (unless you’re already a big name in the industry). If you really want to add your business name to the group - add it to the end. e.g. “Course Creator Community by Jono Petrohilos”

My Favorite Tax Filing Software in 2021

My Favorite Tax Filing Software in 2021

Each year as taxes role around it becomes a stressful time for many. Even with a tax accountant, you have to compile all of the supporting documents they need and provide it to them. Additionally, when they are done with your taxes, it’s important to take the time to check them before submission.

For the past few years it has been easier for me to do my taxes on my own because I had a simple filing (in the future it won’t be like this). Doing it myself has taught me a lot, not just about taxes but also about tax filing software applications. And, since I’m a numbers girl, I look directly into costs and fees before finally clicking the “file” button.

I filed my taxes this year using freetaxusa.com, a tool that I strongly recommend over other tax filing software (Note: I am NOT getting paid to share my opinion on this). I did my research in prior years and thought that TaxAct was the way to go and I actually used them for a while. Then about 2 years ago they dramatically increased their prices and it didn’t look like they improved their software or customer service to go along with it (a general rule is that businesses should have some reason or additional benefit to customers in exchange for increasing prices). So I figured that I would try some other tools out and if I didn’t like them I could always go back to TaxACT.

I am so happy that I ended up shopping around because I eventually found FreetaxUSA. I couldn’t really find any reviews online on Freetaxusa but I tried it out anyway. I found the software to be more helpful than TaxACT and on top of it SO MUCH CHEAPER. The software easily guides you through each part of your tax filing with simple questions. I was surprised as some of the questions that popped up helped me get a tax credit that I was not expecting!

I kept looking for “the catch” like how are they going to try and get more money out of me for something I don’t need. They do offer premium assistance that is not required to file your taxes which I really appreciated. Other tax software providers require that you purchase premium services in order to itemize expenses or file certain schedules. So I ended up paying a total amount of $15 to file BOTH my federal and state taxes.

Free Tax USA was easy, SUPER AFFORDABLE, and absolutely doable if you have a simple tax filing. So far I consider a simple tax filing to be for someone filing as a single adult, with or without itemized expenses and / or a schedule C. I definitely still recommend having an experienced tax professional that you trust file your taxes. However, if you have the time and just want to see what your taxes might look like if you do it yourself, you may just go through the process and see if your results match your accountants. You can always stop short of filing your taxes with Free Tax USA and have your tax accountant file them instead. By filing your taxes yourself you may find you have more understanding of the filing process and can contribute with your tax accountant more effectively.

As a special gift, I have uploaded to my FREE resource library the business expense tracking worksheet I used to file my taxes. I have also included a training video for how to use the worksheet. Check it out if you have business expenses that you want to include in your schedule C tax filing and let me know if you have any questions!

Is there trouble brewing for commercial real estate? (part 1)

Is there trouble brewing for commercial real estate? (part 1)

On February 19th, 2021, the federal reserve issued its semiannual “Monetary Policy Report” (1). A report that I am particularly interested in because it mentioned that “commercial real estate prices remain at historically high levels despite high vacancy rates and appear susceptible to sharp declines, particularly if the pace of distressed transactions picks up or, in the longer term, the pandemic leads to permanent changes in demand.”

I’ve been anticipating this sentence since the beginning of the pandemic as the governors of many states shut down the profitability of many commercial buildings. I fear, however, that readers may not be sure what the federal reserve is talking about or why one could interpret it with concern.

So in this article, I will paint a fictional but relatable and realistic scenario of why there might be concern for the commercial real estate market.

Let’s pretend that there is a yoga studio, owned by Sally, operating profitably in January of 2020. The previous year, the business had the following:

All About Bows and Dinosaurs

All About Bows and Dinosaurs

*Guest Post by Mary Tsangidou the owner and founder of Bows and Dinosaurs Printables, www.bowsanddinosaurs.com.

2020 was a tough year. For everyone, right? For me, the period of quarantine was the trigger to start my own online business.

But first, let me introduce myself. My name is Mary, I am 32 year old, SAHM and live in a small town named Edessa, in Greece. I have studied translation and got my Master's degree in teaching English. I've never officially worked as a teacher, as I realized that, teaching is not my thing.

At some point, I felt emotionally desperate to work. I felt that I wasn't a good mom, because I was 24/7, 365 with my kids, raising them, and looking for a way to balance my life, by doing something creative from home. Pinterest was a huge inspiration as I found an article about printables.

There was a phrase that said "if you need something, someone in the world may need it too" and that was my trigger.

I remembered all these planners I used to transform to make them cuter and all the projects I created for my children's birthday parties and christening. I started creating many projects. Some were a failure but with work, they started to be nice. I started graphic design lessons and something inside me told me that this is my thing! Without too much consideration, I decided to launch my Etsy shop and then website. I had nothing to lose anyway!

Financially, I wasn't able to hire a professional to create my website and tell me a few things about creating a business, so i started reading literally everything about it and hoped for the best. Of course, a professional would have saved me time and mistakes but I took the risk to do it alone. It's been half a month now and I have created some projects that I really love. For me, every single one is unique but trying to improve it further.

A project that I really love is my printable pregnancy planner, as I really want to write everything down and keep memories of everything, especially when it comes to babies. I wish I had created it when my children were newborn. I have designed it in weeks, representing the size of the baby with a fruit! Every week has grids to be filled with pregnancy details, such as symptoms, doctor appointments, cravings, and more. Plus, there are lists with all these things I needed as a new mom for my baby and all the things I needed in my hospital bag.

Finally, I have created many things to accompany the pregnancy planner, such as my baby journal and cards to photograph the growing belly and the baby in the first year of their life. All these come gender-neutral.

For more feel free to check my website! And remember! For the new subscribers, I give a set of printable planners as a gift!

Don’t make business decisions based on how you THINK they may impact taxes

Don’t make business decisions based on how you THINK they may impact taxes

During one of my roles at a large multinational corporation, my business partners asked me to look into the tax benefits of donating material. You see, the team had already bought the material (so it was already expensed, aka “written-off” for tax purposes) but they did not need to use it anymore. They wanted to know if there was any reason for them to donate the material as opposed to just throwing it away. Throwing the material away would be easier so they were looking for an incentive to donate the material.

Since I am a business financial planner, I create and analyze financial budgets and forecasts compared to actual results, I reached out to a tax accountant for an answer. Similarly, in a corporate world, a tax accountant would not answer questions from business partners on planning out the financial impact of future business decisions. Those questions would be deferred to me.

When I reached out to a tax accountant I explained the situation and he answered that since the material had already been written-off (or expensed) there was no further tax benefit that could be gained. When something is expensed then the full value of the item is reduced from taxable income, simplified meaning: you don’t pay taxes on it. Then he said something which embodies so much of what we KNOW in corporate finance but that is not well-known to the average person outside of finance:

Please tell your business partners not to make any business decisions based on how they think it will impact taxes.

Why did he say that? The short of it is that taxes are complicated and a good tax accountant can do your taxes well whether you are making billions of dollars in profit or negative profit. Companies who are making BILLIONS of dollars in profit are paying a relatively small amount in taxes and are using the same tax code that you are as a small business owner. That means that the tax savings are in the tax code and are not based on the business decisions you make. You should make business decisions based on what is best for growing and improving your business not based on how you think it might impact taxes.

And it is something your tax accountant should be saying to you. Similarly to what highly paid tax accountants for large corporations say to their business partners.

Healthy Habits Hack Gut Health with Natural Lemonade

Healthy Habits Hack Gut Health with Natural Lemonade

Having trouble with constipation? I’ll be honest, every once and a while I’ll notice that my gut seems to be forgetting about getting rid of all the food I’ve been eating. It is not a very comfortable feeling.

Even though I take a bunch of nutrition supplements, usually they make me feel bloated and don’t really help with the problem. Then one day I started craving lemonade; lemonade with REAL LEMONS. So because of my cravings and no other reason really I started making my own lemonade with the following ingredients:

Pure filtered water, ice, lemon juice (squeezed from a lemon), sugar.

Perfect! The lemonade satisfied my cravings and gave my morning routine a little bounce. Then I noticed something interesting, after drinking the lemonade consistently (every day) for 5 to 7 days suddenly all of the waste that had accumulated in my gut just left my body. It felt great! I was so shocked. So I was curious and began researching if lemonade may actually help with gut health.

Some natural blogs and natural health experts claim that lemon juice can help with all kinds of ailments and improve digestive health. Other sites set out to disprove this claim. So it looks like it really depends on the health profile of the individual and if you notice a difference or not.

In my opinion, I personally noticed a big difference in gut health when drinking lemon juice from a lemon consistently over a several day period. I think the important thing is to distinguish between natural lemonade from real lemons and drink products marketed as lemonade with other ingredients in them.

Let’s look at the ingredients in Minute Maid lemonade for example. The “healthy” version of minute maid lemonade ingredients looks like this:

PURE FILTERED WATER, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, LEMON JUICE FROM CONCENTRATE, LEMON PULP, NATURAL FLAVORS, SUGAR.

Do you notice the high fructose corn syrup? I don’t think that can be good for gut health! Instead of opting for a version of lemonade with added ingredients I just try drinking lemon juice from a real lemon in whatever form or fashion you enjoy, whether that be with warm water or cold water and a hint of sugar.

Tips on Attracting Airbnb Customers

Tips on Attracting Airbnb Customers

I was so excited to start working at a large Tech Company in the Bay Area, but I didn’t want to MOVE to the Bay Area. My family and community all lived a few hours away and I had just gotten out of a traumatizing lease in San Francisco. So I decided instead to commute to the Bay Area during the work week and stay at various Airbnbs or hotels. Needless to say I have quite a few thoughts on Airbnbs and hotels in the Bay Area and have picked up some tips based on my background and discussions with Airbnb hosts.

Let me tell you a little more about the kind of Airbnb guest I try to be:

  • Always try to pick up after myself even during the week that I am staying there

  • Mostly keep to myself especially after long workdays

  • Usually ate dinner at my company, at a restaurant, or lived off snack bars, cheese sticks, and pita chips since I didn’t like cooking in other people’s homes

  • Value cleanliness

  • Faith-centered so I try not to break or damage other people’s things and also not to steal

If you are an Airbnb host and you are looking for customers similar to me I have some tips on how to attract customers like me. And just so you know, if you are new to Airbnb I have heard from Airbnb hosts who have had some really tough customers who weren’t clean and did damage some things in the room. Everybody is different and I’m willing to share what I looked for when choosing an Airbnb room.

I want to preface these tips with the understanding that for many people and Airbnb is an alternative to a hotel room. Here are the accommodations I can usually expect from the hotel rooms (*pre-covid) I would consider as an alternative:

Amazon's profits increased amid an economically devastating pandemic

Amazon's profits increased amid an economically devastating pandemic

Amazon recently released in a current report Form 8-K(1) on February 2nd, 2021, that Jeff Bezos “plans to transition to the role of Executive Chair in the third quarter of 2021” and that “Andrew R. Jassy, currently CEO Amazon Web Services, will succeed Mr. Bezos as Amazon’s Chief Executive Officer and President in the third quarter of 2021.” This was unexpected news no doubt and worth a lot of attention.

In that same report, however, the company also announced record breaking sales and a higher profitability margin amid an economically devastating pandemic.

Amazon’s sales increased 38% in 2020 and its net income increased about 84%. To give context on how exceptional this was, the S&P 500 generated around 11-12% average annual returns from 1926-2019. So in a non-pandemic year we would expect on average for profitable corporations to generate a return of about 11-12%. So an 84% increase in net income is very very high compared to the average.

On top of that the United States expected real GDP decreased by -3.5% in 2020, compared to an increase of +2.2% in 2019. This means that in 2020 there was lower total wealth available to go around in the U.S. compared to 2019. We might assume from Amazon’s earnings then that a higher percentage of total wealth in the United States went to Amazon.

On the flip side, many small business owners and the people who work for those businesses have had a tremendously tough year. In some cases losing their life’s savings and their life’s work through no fault of their own and purely as a direct result from this pandemic. It’s hard to find a data driven prediction but I am estimating that something like 30% of small businesses across the country either have or expect to have to shut their doors for good. Government intervention destroyed small businesses and funneled customers and sales towards big tech companies like Amazon.

Tips for taking a comfortable road trip

Tips for taking a comfortable road trip

Growing up my family would take ridiculously long road trips up and down the west coast for any number of reasons. We traveled from Mount Hood and Seattle, to Shasta and Tahoe, all the way down to Palm Springs and San Diego. This was all before I left the West Coast to go to University on the East Coast and continued on my road tripping adventures. I have accumulated a range of experience in all kinds of different situations and I am happy to share my strategies for a comfortable road trip.

TIps for preparing in advance

Like many other things, planning and preparation can make all the difference in a successfully comfortable road trip. I recommend making the following preparations a day in advance:

Prepare your car

  • Fill gas tank

  • Check your oil: If possible I recommend changing your oil before a long road trip because a healthy care can improve the experience.

  • Check you have a spare tire and tools to change it

  • Set up bluetooth and car systems

  • Sync devices to bluetooth and car systems: you don’t want to try and figure out possibly complex car systems when you are ready to get on the road

  • Vacuum the floors: dust can be dangerous for your respiratory system and since you will be cramped in the cabin for an extended period of time vacuuming can help remove some harmful particles from the air

  • Wipe down car: just a simple wipe down of the car with a rag and water can make a big difference in getting rid of dust

How I beat uncontrollable food cravings - part 2

How I beat uncontrollable food cravings - part 2

At work in China, I sat next to a woman who was pregnant and seemingly always eating fruit. She liked to “teach” me her understanding of nutrition since I apparently needed the help. One of the first things she told me was to avoid eating rice. Rice is a staple in China and almost always served during meals. I learned, however, that it was not common for people to eat all, if any, rice out of their bowls.

Food was served family style and each person would pick a few pieces of food (like chicken or vegetables) out of the communal bowls and place them on their bowls of rice. They would then eat the food with maybe a few grains of rice with it. At the end of the meal many rice bowls would still be full and individuals would pour the uneaten rice into a food container to save for the next meal. My co-worker also told me to avoid bread and sweets and to try and make the majority of my diet fruits and vegetables.

I enthusiastically tried to cut down my starch intake according to my coworker’s advice and thought it would be easy for me since I had already followed a diet avoiding grains and sweets back in the United States. I soon found that for some reason it was different, harder, for me to try and reduce my intake of starches in China. After a few meals of eating mostly fruits and vegetables I would get seemingly uncontrollable food cravings and end up eating large quantities of food later on. It seemed like the more I tried to eat healthy foods the stronger my food cravings. This was very confusing for me because I followed a similar diet before and didn’t have the same experience, what was different for me in Shanghai compared to the U.S.?

Ingredients in Meatless Burgers may be Similar to Dog Food

Ingredients in Meatless Burgers may be Similar to Dog Food

I am a big believer that food is “healthy” or “not-healthy” based on whether it was processed, the chemicals it was exposed to, synthetic mutations, and other unnatural exposures as opposed to the base form of the underlying food item. If I grow a bunch of fruits and vegetables in my backyard and make an all veggie meal that sounds pretty healthy. Whereas if I go to a store and buy dog food made from some form of a vegetable that is run through multiple machines, accumulated dust and other chemicals, and packaged in plastic that doesn’t sound as healthy to me.

I recently read an article posted on drovers.com by Greg Henderson titled “@GHGGuru: Fake Meat ‘Not Very Different from Dog Food’”. The article discusses an interview with University of California/Davis professor Frank Mitloehner on the AgriTalk Podcast about how ingredients in the impossible burger and beyond burger are very similar to dog food except for a few additional spices for taste. This is different from the word of mouth opinions I have heard on the health attributes of these meatless burgers.

I have been told by word of mouth from a few people that the impossible burger and the beyond burger are “healthy vegetarian options”. I didn’t try and explain my different opinion on the subject in those instances because it didn’t seem like the right time. I consider healthy vegetarian options to be mainly organic grains, fruits, and vegetables with as minimal processing and chemicals as is available. So why do we have 2 very different opinions? Mainly because we listen to different types of advertising.

How I beat uncontrollable food cravings - part 1

How I beat uncontrollable food cravings - part 1

I remember an astonishingly bright morning sky leaving the subway terminal in Pudong, China. As opposed to Nanpu by the Bund, here I could see the sun and even a semi-blue sky. In this part of Shanghai the streets were wider and the buildings shorter but it still took about ten minutes to walk past one aggressively wide building equivalent in length to a whole city block in San Francisco. I had another 30-minute walk to my work building even though it was only a few streets away.

Shanghai is FULL of bright lights, STUFF, food, noise, pollution, and people. For a year I traversed the city streets and tried to manage the barrage of information thrown at me from every angle. It wasn’t until years later that I could finally make sense of the changes I underwent mentally and physically and understood the impact that stress and pollutants had on my body. For example, just undergoing a change of any kind can be a stressor and put a strain on your adrenal gland and your adrenal gland uses vitamin C like how a car uses gasoline. I wish I knew then to take vitamin C to help balance out my adrenal gland and calm down my senses, but instead I continued to run on a near empty gas tank.

Natural oils are not just great for cooking but also for skin care. I only started using natural oils a few years ago after I bought argan oil as a facial oil. I started putting argan oil on my lips and noticed an immediate plumping and moisturizing effect. This effect was temporary however and required frequent re-application.

Aside from natural oils I have found that drinking a lot of quality water is the most effective and long-lasting way for me to moisturize my lips. For example, I started drinking Fiji water a few years ago and found that it helped with my dry lips! When I went back to drinking other bottles of water my dry lips returned, which has led me to believe that water with a lot of chemicals, salines, or chlorine in it may do little to help with dry-lips.

Many people seek out ways to effectively ward-off dry lips and try lip balm. I have tried lip balms as well and have found that even the brands with the most natural ingredients don’t seem to get absorbed into my skin like oils do. Try them out for yourself and you should be able to find most, if not all, of the oils on this list at your closest natural foods store.

5 Quick, easy, and natural face masks with ingredients from your kitchen

5 Quick, easy, and natural face masks with ingredients from your kitchen

Raise your hand if you have searched the internet for quick and easy natural face masks with ingredients from your kitchen and then decided against trying anything you found because it took too much time. Similar to cooking or baking, most of the “recipes” I found included measuring out teaspoons and tablespoons of various ingredients which for me was just too much. I’m busy, I have things to do, and I have to save my energy for making recipes to cook food I can eat so that I don’t starve.

Here is a life-hack on how to eat healthy and quickly and easily get the benefit of temporarily rubbing natural food with antioxidants on your skin as well:

  1. Eat a piece of fruit

  2. Spread the peel or the remaining part of the fruit on your face

  3. Wash off soon after

I started doing this with a papaya (see #1) because some of my favorite skin care brands boasted about the papaya enzymes in their products. I thought to myself, “I’m eating a papaya, can’t I just smear this on my face and get some of the benefits of the papaya on my skin?” So after I finished eating I took the inside of the papaya by the skin and rubbed it all over my face and washed it off after about 30 seconds. I felt that the results were significant, although seemingly temporary.

My skin looked tighter and clearer immediately after washing off the face mask! To be fair this only lasted until my face got oilier as the day wore on but isn’t a big part of healthy-looking skin maintenance? I’m hoping to prevent aging as best I can by frequently doing a little to add moisture and nutrients. I tell myself it is worth the dedication.

For example, if I was dedicated at the age of 14 to maintaining my facial skin health I would be in pretty good shape. Unfortunately, I didn’t start really working on skin maintenance until about 10 years later. I’m not commenting on how successful I have been in preventing my skin from aging but I strive to keep my skin looking like it is today and hopefully prevent aging tomorrow.

Vitamin C "Curing the Incurable"

Vitamin C "Curing the Incurable"

This week our main topic is vitamin C as we posted episode 7 of our podcast – protect your cells with vitamin C. I want to discuss this subject further by referencing the book “Curing the Incurable” by Thomas E. Levy (1). Levy discusses three topics that I found especially interesting:

  1. Vitamin C is not really a vitamin but a necessary nutrient needed to stay healthy.

  2. Humans cannot synthesize vitamin C on their own and need to ingest a varying amount of it daily or else risk having a deficiency.

  3. Levy recommends high doses of vitamin C.

I found this book very useful in providing me a medical opinion on vitamin C using a variety of scientific references. It has further strengthened my opinion that it is important to take high quality vitamin C nutrition supplements** in order to maintain or improve health.

Vitamin C is not really a vitamin

What is vitamin C if it is not really a vitamin? Well, it has something to do with helping to enhance the flow of electricity in the body. According to Levy, “health exists when electrons flow fully and freely, illness exists when this flow is significantly impaired, and death occurs when this flow stops.” From what I understand, vitamin C is used up as electricity flows through the body and a greater amount of vitamin C is needed to help the electricity flow for a person dealing with illness or other health problem. The body needs vitamin C similar to how a car needs gasoline: gasoline is needed for a car to go anywhere and more gasoline is needed for farther distances or steep inclines.
